ESPERANZA CD – DESCRIPTION

ESPERANZA is the result of all the experience gathered by Brasil Papaya in almost a decade of working side by side on stage and in the studio. In comparison with the previous album, the new album is a much more mature and bold type of work. A mix, without fear, rhythms as different as tango, “choro”, “chamamé”, flamenco, jazz and funk. Everything dressed up in rock´n´roll.

Brasil Papaya´s goal in ESPERANZA is to paint a self portrait in a very natural way, avoiding digital editing, “triggers” and electronic devices during the recordings and mixing. In eight tracks, what you hear is the rhythm of human variations, music made by guitars, “cavaquinho”, acoustic guitar, pianos, bass, percussions and drums. “I believe that recording a CD pretty much reminds you of a momentary picture, that´s why we are searching for some kind of truth in our music, without a lot of effects and without modifying it from its natural form. Because, later, we are sure to want to know ourselves all over again and, for that, we´ll need to look back”, explains guitar player Renato Pimentel.

Renato, alongside with his brother, Eduardo, signs the production of ESPERANZA, repeating the pair work from the previous work. But, there is a huge difference with all the experience gathered in the last ten years. Knowledge that Eduardo has developed teaching acoustic guitar and electric guitar, working on different projects and bands. Renato has learned it from his production work as head of the studio The Magic Place – from rock, “choro”, jazz, popular Brazilian music and heavy metal artists.

Another meaningful change is the presence of bass player Adriano “Baga” Rotini and the drummer Alex Paulista in the compositions. Showing that there is an intense desire for Brasil Papaya to be a band in the greater sense of the word, and not just a project lead by the guitarist’s. The bass player explains it: “In the first CD, the ideas were basically ready. That´s because they all came from a demo tape previously recorded, before we got in the band. We had the freedom to create our own drums and bass arrangements, but we followed predefined lines. In this new work, on the other hand, there was an authentic collaboration from everyone, contributing with their own ideas for the songs”. A proof of this collaboration is the presence of all members in each and every one of the eight pieces on ESPERANZA, an album that tries to maintain simplicity and the rock´n´roll feeling without putting aside the virtuosity that has always been Brasil Papaya´s trademark.

LIBERTANGO – Is it possible to unite the sadness of a GAITA-PONTO tango with the heaviness of distorted guitars and double bass drums The re-recording of this Astor Piazolla´s classic is proof that the answer is YES. “Since the first time we heard this song we could listen to its heavy metal essence”.

PÉ NA TÁBUA – Inspired by the spedd of our cousin, and also guitar player Luizinho, in his fierce car, “Pé na Tábua” brings AC/DC together with a “Cavaquinho”, in the most pure rock´n´roll!

PUNKBONE FIGHTER – The punk´s ideology – anti-system protest – and the energy of the fast music, defying the world, without giving up.

THE COWBOY – An Arnaldo Baptista song never recorded in studio by Patrulha do Espaço, registered only in a legendary live version and in “Singin´ Alone”, solo album by Arnaldo. Humbly, we gave to it new life with the blessings of drummer Rolando Castelo Júnior, Patrulha do Espaço´s soul!

NOYÉ – The calmness of a sunny day with the blue ocean watched in concentration by a life-guard. Everything reflected in acoustic guitar techniques, from “chamamé” to flamenco, going through jazz with rock´n´roll happiness as a background.

KICHUTE – Recorded in 1999 for the collection called PROJETO 12:30 from UFSC (the Federal University from the state of Santa Catarina) – and, probably one of the heaviest of all Brasil Papaya´s songs – was recorded live in August, 28, 2004, in the Adolpho Mello theater, in São José (near Florianópolis, the capital of the south state of Santa Catarina.

FOR ALL – Traditional and popular music, ‘pandeiro’, birds, ‘old radio and breakfast at granny´s house’. And, what if, the same melody and chords had a heavy metal face, something like the 80´s, Van Halen, Michael Schenker, UFO ?

ESPERANZA – Kept since 2000, thanks to a collection that was not released, Esperanza has always brought us an idea, a desire that things could change, everything could change and people´s character could be even better.
